This small article (appeared in The Hindu Survey of the Environment 1994) is based on the presentation made to the Review Committee (Jayant Patil Committee) appointed by the Government of India to review the controversial Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) Project (SSP). It analyses the electricity generation from SSP and points out that over half a dozen alternatives are not only feasible but would also be superior from economic as well as social perspectives to power generation from SSP.
